HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) has announced that the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has allocated $5 million in grant and low-interest loan funding for crucial waterline and sewer projects in Wampum Borough.

The funding will be distributed as follows: Wampum Borough will receive a $1.6 million grant to upgrade the drinking water system, specifically targeting the removal of approximately 50 lead service lines along Clyde, Kay, and Main streets. New copper service lines will be installed in their place. Additionally, the borough will receive $3.4 million ($2.39 million grant and $1 million loan) to replace distribution lines near Clyde, Kay, Main, and Beaver streets with 9,300 feet of new six-inch ductile iron waterline, including miscellaneous accessories and restoration work. A portion of the new waterline will be encased in a 12-inch steel pipe.

Representative Bernstine highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental element of improved quality of life. It is also a crucial function of government to provide the proper core infrastructure systems to encourage new economic development.” He also praised the collaboration between state and municipal governments, describing it as “a fine example of state and municipal governments working together to effectively meet the essential needs of our communities and doing so in a way that is fiscally responsible.”

PENNVEST, established in 1988, aims to support the design, engineering, and construction of both public and private drinking water distribution and treatment facilities, as well as stormwater and wastewater projects.

The project funding secured by Rep. Bernstine for Wampum Borough underscores the commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
