Rep. Marla Brown has announced that Mohawk, Laurel, and Union Area school districts are among 109 schools in Pennsylvania receiving funds from the state Department of Education’s Environmental Repair Grants program. The initiative aims to enhance water infrastructure, eliminate contamination, and address environmental hazards in schools.
Mohawk School District is set to receive $755,168, Laurel School District will be awarded $478,282, and Union Area School District will get $25,367.
The total grant funding of $75 million is intended for school districts, career and technical education centers (CTCs), and charter schools across the Commonwealth to tackle issues such as lead and other water contaminants, mold, and asbestos. Schools can use these funds to install treatment devices at points of use, replace infrastructure components, and address other critical environmental concerns.
“I’m proud our local schools, Mohawk, Laurel and Union Area will receive crucial funding to improve the safety and well-being of their students and staff,” said Brown. “This investment will go a long way in ensuring that our children have access to clean water, safe environments and a healthier learning space.”
Since its inception, the Environmental Repairs Grants program has allocated a total of $275 million for school infrastructure improvements across Pennsylvania. This reflects an ongoing commitment to fostering safer educational environments.
“It is vital we continue to invest in our schools not only for the academic success of the students but for their overall health and safety. I look forward to seeing the positive changes these grants will bring to our local schools.” said Brown.
