Nearly $1.9 million in state funding has been allocated to municipalities in Lawrence County, according to an announcement by Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence). The grants, provided through the Local Share Account (LSA) and the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP), will support infrastructure upgrades and community development initiatives.

The LSA grants are funded through gaming revenues. The following projects received funding: Bessemer Municipal Authority was awarded $325,000 for upgrades at its wastewater treatment plant, including a new headworks building and debris removal system; Mahoning Township received $625,000 for improvements to its wastewater system, such as pump replacements and equipment upgrades; New Wilmington Borough secured $100,000 for streetscape improvements on Vine Street; North Beaver Township Municipal Authority was granted $100,000 to replace aging grinder pumps in its sewage system; New Castle Sanitation Authority obtained $350,000 for the purchase of a sewer flusher truck and dump truck; Neshannock Township received $328,772 for outdoor enhancements at the Hutchison Community Center.

Rep. Brown worked with Sen. Michele Brooks (R-Crawford/Lawrence/Mercer) to advocate for these funds.

“These LSA grants help communities tackle costly infrastructure projects that are essential to public health and safety,” said Brown. “This funding will allow local governments to make needed upgrades while easing the burden on taxpayers.”

In addition to the LSA awards, GTRP funding totaling $150,000 was announced for recreational and historic preservation efforts. The City of New Castle will use a $100,000 grant to restore a historic 1922 carousel at the New Castle Public Library. Taylor Township is set to receive $50,000 for ADA-accessible playground improvements at Taylor Township Park.

“Strong communities depend on places that connect people and encourage growth,” said Brown. “These projects preserve local history and expand recreational opportunities across Lawrence County.”

Both grant programs are administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority with the aim of supporting infrastructure development as well as recreation and community enhancement throughout Pennsylvania.
