A resolution recognizing October 17, 2024, as Chuck Tanner Day in Pennsylvania has passed the House of Representatives with significant support. The resolution was backed by Representative Marla Brown from Lawrence County.

“Chuck Tanner embodied the spirit of teamwork, optimism and dedication,” said Brown. “He wasn’t just a baseball icon, but a cherished member of the New Castle community. His impact both on and off the field continues to inspire, and I’m proud to help recognize his incredible contributions to Pennsylvania.”

Tanner is remembered for leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series Championship on October 17, 1979. That season became known as “We Are Family,” highlighting his leadership and ability to unite his team.

In addition to his baseball achievements, Tanner maintained strong ties with New Castle throughout his life. He organized baseball clinics for young players across Pennsylvania and ran a local restaurant named Chuck Tanner’s, which stands as a symbol of his enduring presence in the community.

On November 7, Representative Brown will present Tanner’s family with a House of Representatives citation during Pittsburgh’s celebration of the Pirates’ 45th anniversary of their World Series victory.
