A resolution supported by Representative Marla Brown to designate October 17, 2024, as Chuck Tanner Day in Pennsylvania has passed the House of Representatives. The resolution honors Chuck Tanner, a New Castle native known for his leadership and contributions to Major League Baseball.

“Chuck Tanner embodied the spirit of teamwork, optimism and dedication,” said Brown. “He wasn’t just a baseball icon, but a cherished member of the New Castle community. His impact both on and off the field continues to inspire, and I’m proud to help recognize his incredible contributions to Pennsylvania.”

Tanner led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series Championship on October 17, 1979. The season was notable for its emphasis on unity under his leadership. Tanner’s connection with New Castle extended beyond baseball; he was involved in community activities such as organizing baseball clinics for young players throughout Pennsylvania.

Brown plans to present Tanner’s family with a citation from the House of Representatives during Pittsburgh’s celebration of the Pirates’ 45th anniversary of their World Series win.
