Rep. Marla Brown of Pennsylvania expressed strong opposition to House Bill 1330, the General Appropriations Act, after it passed in the House. Brown criticized the process and content of the budget bill.
“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, how can I vote in favor of legislation that was dropped into our lap about five minutes before we were asked to vote on an amendment to the General Appropriations bill. This bill was not agreed to by the Senate,” she stated.
Brown described the budget as “irresponsible and reckless,” citing its lack of transparency and potential risk to taxpayers. She pointed out that essential documents needed for evaluation were missing from the $50.6 billion spending plan.
“When the governor took office, the state had more than $13 billion in reserves. That number will be cut in half by the end of this year. This budget does nothing to slow the bleeding,” Brown said.
Brown warned that rising costs surpassing revenue would lead to inevitable future tax hikes, accusing Democrats of spending irresponsibly at taxpayers’ expense.
She highlighted Republican priorities such as school choice, energy development support, and cutting bureaucracy which she felt were ignored in this proposal. “We should be helping working families, not growing bureaucracy,” Brown emphasized.
“This proposal is incomplete, unsustainable and driven by politics, not principles. Until it includes serious reforms, the only responsible vote is ‘no.’”
