Unwrapping the Names of Jesus
Jesus is the Light of the World
Throughout Scripture, darkness often represents evil and sin, while light represents goodness, truth, and holiness. And it makes sense, right? We tend to dislike darkness. We fill our homes with light, console our children when they are afraid of the dark, and we avoid places filled with darkness, fearing what lingers in the shadows.
Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." (John 8:12) He illuminates our lives with His brilliance, shining into nooks and crannies and giving us a clearer look at the areas of our lives we need to surrender to God. We keep our sins hidden away, hoping that no one will ever see them. Isolation and darkness is where Satan wreaks havoc with our lives. But when we bring our fears, our sins, our doubts, our strife into the light, Jesus takes over the battle on our behalf. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:5)
Jesus is truly the Light of the World. In the Light of His truth we find freedom, safety, peace, and hope. And by believing in Him, we are called to also be a light in this world. Just like we light candles one by one on Christmas Eve, we each carry the light of Jesus and need to share it with others. And in doing so, we take away darkness and give Satan less and less to work with.
