Wilmington Area Middle School issued the following announcement on Sept. 10.

Dear WASD Families,

We recognize that in-person instruction is the strongest and most beneficial learning model for

the majority of our students. The District’s goal for the 2021-22 school year is to maximize in-

person learning and minimize any disruptions caused by COVID-19 and associated changes in

federal, state, and local mandates.

As you are aware, the Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health issued an

Order directing face coverings in school entities that took effect September 7, 2021. Based on

this Order, universal masking is required for all individuals regardless of vaccination status while indoors in our schools. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has emphasized that this is not a mask optional policy.

To this point, the District has complied with the Department of Health’s Order and provided an

Exception Form for those qualifying students. The District has and will continue to consider

application for exception to face covering requirements by submitting the District’s Exception

Form along with a medical excuse. The District’s form is available on our website or can be

obtained at the District Office.

Notwithstanding, in order for the District to continue to honor a child’s exception and best ensure the safety of all students and staff, the District will require you to submit documentation from your child’s licensed medical practitioner verifying your child’s stated exception.

Commencing Monday, September 13, 2021, students must wear a facial covering until the District’s Exception Form and student’s corresponding medical excuse are presented to the school nurse.

Students who have already submitted the District’s form must wear a facial covering until the

medical excuse is submitted to the nurse.  Students who refuse to wear a facial covering will be sent to the Principal’s Office, and a parent/guardian will be contacted.

On Monday, September 13, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. I will host a virtual town hall answering submitted

questions concerning the Mask Medical Excuse. Further details for this event will be provided.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

Should you have any questions, please

contact your building Principal.
