Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) has announced that Mohawk, Laurel, and Union Area school districts are among 109 schools in Pennsylvania to receive funding from the state Department of Education's Environmental Repair Grants program. These grants aim to improve water infrastructure, eliminate contamination, and address other environmental hazards in schools.
The Mohawk School District will receive $755,168, the Laurel School District will be awarded $478,282, and Union Area School District was granted $25,367.
The $75 million grant funding will assist school districts, career and technical education centers (CTCs), and charter schools across the Commonwealth in addressing issues such as lead and other water contaminants, mold, and asbestos. Schools may use the funding to install point-of-use treatment devices, replace infrastructure, and tackle other pressing environmental needs.
“I’m proud our local schools, Mohawk, Laurel and Union Area, will receive crucial funding to improve the safety and well-being of their students and staff,” said Brown. “This investment will go a long way in ensuring that our children have access to clean water, safe environments and a healthier learning space.”
Since the launch of the Environmental Repairs Grants program, a total of $275 million has been allocated to school infrastructure and environmental repairs across Pennsylvania.
“It is vital we continue to invest in our schools, not only for the academic success of the students but for their overall health and safety. I look forward to seeing the positive changes these grants will bring to our local schools,” said Brown.
