Rep. Aaron Bernstine has voiced strong opposition to Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed state budget during a joint session of the General Assembly. Bernstine criticized the $51.47 billion proposal, which marks a 7.5% increase in government spending over the current fiscal year.
"This budget is laughable, but the sad part is, it’s not funny," said Bernstine. He compared Shapiro to former President Obama, describing him as a "tax and spend politician." Bernstine expressed concerns that the budget would lead to new taxes and increased debt for Pennsylvania families and future generations.
He further argued that Shapiro's plan could result in significant tax hikes. "If we spend the way the governor wants to, Pennsylvania taxpayers and job creators will be on the hook for it with massive tax hikes in the future," he stated.
Bernstine also highlighted potential risks to public safety due to proposed prison closures and criticized additional taxes on small businesses and energy sources. "The governor’s energy tax proposal doesn’t just undermine our economy; it will hike our energy bills and cost jobs," he said.
The House Appropriations Committee will begin public hearings on February 18 to analyze the budget proposal further.
