Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) will host a free shredding event on Saturday, June 15, at her district office parking lot to help residents of the 9th Legislative District protect themselves against identity theft by securely destroying personal documents.

The event is scheduled for 28 N. Mill St., New Castle, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Shredding documents that contain sensitive information is one of the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft, so I am happy to provide this service to my constituents,” said Brown. “Although identity thieves prey on senior citizens especially, anyone, regardless of age, income or educational background, can be victimized.”

This event targets items containing information such as bank accounts or Social Security numbers. Residents are asked not to bring old phone books, magazines, cards, letters, folders, newspapers, junk mail, etc., as these items can be recycled. There is no need to remove staples or paper clips; however, documents should be taken out of binders and notebooks.

“As you take steps to protect your information and identity, you’ll make yourself a more difficult target for thieves and may even stop them in their tracks,” added Brown.

No advance registration is required for participation. For more information, residents can call Brown’s office at 724-498-4391.
